SÉRIE - MÉTODOS DE ENSINO DE LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA (THE DIRECT METHOD)

 

Hey teachers,

    This is the second part on English teaching methods. At this point let's think about the direct method. In our reality, considering students with different levels of learning, at first glance, it may seem a little advanced or difficult to apply, but if we think that studying a new language means diving into this new way of saying and listening to the world and, of course, if we adapt our speech to the children's level, we will see that it is possible and necessary to use this method at least sometimes during our approach. Below you will see the main aspects of the direct method.

THE DIRECT METHOD 

Features:

* No translation is allowed
* The first objective is to communicate.
* Remarkable aspects of the method:
    - Read and speak in the target language from the start
    - Native language is not used in the classroom
    - Students must learn to think in the target language
    - Pay special attention to pronunciation
    - Self-correction is always encouraged.
    - Conversation activities.
    - Grammar is taught inductively.
    - The syllabus is based on topics or situations, not grammatical structures.
    - Vocabulary is emphasized over grammar.

    - All language skills are covered (reading, writing, listening, speaking).

*Method Techniques

    - Reading aloud
    - Question and answer exercises
    - Self-correction made by the students themselves
    - Conversation practice
    - Fill-in-the-blank exercises
    - Dictation
    - Images and texts to reinforce understanding

   So, as you can see, the direct method requires different skills from the teacher and the students. In the video below, you will see three disadvantages of the direct method. I don't think the direct method is only possible to be applied by native speakers. If you have a minimal level of pronunciation, it is perfectly plausible to work with children using the direct method. Despite this part, the video is an excellent summary of this methodology.

    Esta é a segunda parte sobre métodos de ensino de inglês. Neste ponto, vamos pensar sobre o método direto. Em nossa realidade, considerando alunos com diferentes níveis de aprendizagem, à primeira vista, pode parecer um pouco avançado ou difícil de aplicar, mas se pensarmos que estudar um novo idioma significa mergulhar nessa nova forma de dizer e ouvir o mundo e , claro, se adaptarmos nossa fala ao nível das crianças, veremos que é possível e necessário usar esse método pelo menos algumas vezes durante nossa abordagem. O MÉTODO DIRETO

Características:

* Nenhuma tradução é permitida

* O primeiro objetivo é comunicar.

* Aspectos marcantes do método:

    - Ler e falar no idioma de destino desde o início

    - A língua nativa não é usada na sala de aula

    - Os alunos devem aprender a pensar na língua-alvo

    - Preste atenção especial à pronúncia

    - A autocorreção é sempre incentivada.

    - Atividades de conversação.

    - A gramática é ensinada indutivamente.

  - O programa é baseado em tópicos ou situações, não em estruturas gramaticais.

    - O vocabulário é enfatizado sobre a gramática.

    - Todas as competências linguísticas são abrangidas (ler, escrever, ouvir, falar).

*Técnicas do Método

    - Ler em voz alta

    - Exercícios de perguntas e respostas

    - Autocorreção feita pelos próprios alunos

    - Prática de conversação

    - Exercícios de preenchimento de lacunas

    - Ditado

    - Imagens e textos para reforçar a compreensão

    Então, como você pode ver, o método direto requer habilidades diferentes do professor e dos alunos. No vídeo abaixo, você verá três desvantagens do método direto. Não acho que o método direto só seja possível de ser aplicado por falantes nativos. Se você tem um nível mínimo de pronúncia, é perfeitamente plausível trabalhar com crianças usando o método direto. Apesar desta parte, o vídeo é um excelente resumo desta metodologia.
